A GWR cabside numberplate, 2881, from a 2800 Class 2-8-0 built at Swindon in March 1919. In BR days, following spells at Oxford and Severn Tunnel Junction, it spent its last ten years at Newton Abbot from where it was withdrawn on 11 January 1960 and cut up at Swindon Works. Cast brass, the front repainted. £500-800

The case is 12"x7½" and complete with ink bottle, pen holder and wooden divisions. Very good condition for its age of 132 years. £150-300

Lot 13 Smokeboxes: 9014.
A smokebox numberplate, 9014, from a GWR 9000 Class 4-4-0 built at Swindon in August 1937, using the frames of withdrawn Bulldog Class No 3380 and replacing Duke Class No 3266, hence the Class often being known as Dukedogs. Numbered 3266 when rebuilt, it was renumbered 9018 in August 1946. It spent most of its BR days at Machynlleth before moving in June 1957 to Croes Newydd from where it was withdrawn on 25 October 1960 and cut up at Swindon Works. One of only three smokebox numberplates from this class to appear in Auction, the last, this one, over seventeen years ago. Repainted. £400-600

A nameplate, CAXTON HALL, from a GWR 4900 Hall Class 4-6-0 No 5922 built at Swindon in May 1933 and named after the iconic public building in the City of Westminster. Allocated to Old Oak Common by January 1948, it moved the following year to Swindon where it spent most of its BR days before a final move in October 1961 to Oxford from where it was withdrawn on 6 January 1964 and cut up at Swindon Works. A smokebox numberplate, 90492, from a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order by Vulcan Foundry, Works No 5108, in August 1944, WD No 78707. Loaned to the LNER in December 1945 and purchased by them in December 1946, their No 3171, becoming BR 90492. Its BR sheds were Colwick, Annesley, Immingham, Langwith Junction and finally back to Colwick from where it was withdrawn on 17 October 1965 and sold for scrap to Drapers at Hull. Ex loco condition. £350-500

A cabside numberplate, CAMINOS DE FERRO MOCAMBIQUE 959, from a 3ft 6ins 4-8-2+2-8-4 951 Class Garratt built by Haine St Pierre in Belgium, works No 2067, in 1952, one of the first new Garratts built for the CFM after it ceased to be an integral part of the Rhodesian Railways system. It was last reported at Machipanda, near the border with Zimbabwe. Cast brass, 20"x14", the front repainted. £250-400

The station was between Drax and Wrangbrook Junction and closed to passengers in 1931, the line finally closing in 1959. The company was founded in 1885 and shortened its name to the Hull and Barnsley Railway in 1905. £300-500

Lot 52 Nameplates: Sister Dora, Badge.
A locomotive badge from Class 31, 31 530 SISTER DORA. Named at Bescot depot on 9 October 1988 by the Vice Chairman of Walsall Heath Authority to commemorate the work of Dorothy Windlow Pattison (1832 to 1878), a local nurse who administered to the sick during a smallpox epidemic in the West Midlands. She was affectionately known as Sister Dora. This badge was added when the loco was renumbered from 31430 in May 1990. All plates were removed in February 1996. Cast aluminium, 12¼"x8", ex loco condition. £300-500

A shedplate 10A Springs Branch, Wigan (1935 to February 1958), then Carnforth (September 1963 to August 1968). This ex LNWR shed at Wigan had over 50 locos during this period. The ex LNWR shed at Carnforth, formerly 11A and 24L, had just 3 Jubilees when it adopted this code, but its most famous charge was undoubtedly the last Britannia, 70013, which worked 1T57 on the final day of mainline steam. A worksplate, ENGLISH ELECTRIC/VULCAN FOUNDRY, 2276/D355, 1955, from a New Zealand Railway DG Class diesel electric No 772 which was renumbered DG 2255 in 1979 and, on withdrawal in 1983, saved by the Diesel Traction Group and took part in the Rail 125 celebrations in 1988. Overhauled to main line standard in 2009, it has run on several excursions and also at the Ferrymead Heritage Park. Cast brass, 17"x10½", the front repainted. £350-500

A worksplate VULCAN FOUNDRY, 5248, 1945, from a War Department Austerity 2-8-0 built to Ministry of Supply order in April 1945, WD No 79305. Loaned to the LNER in May 1946 as O7 Class No 3198 and acquired by them in February 1947, becoming BR 63198 and 90519 in February 1951. Its sheds included New England, March, Colwick, Mexborough and Barrow Hill from where it was withdrawn on 21 September 1964 and sold for scrap to W.Heselwood at Attercliffe. Cast brass, 9½"x5¾", lightly cleaned but unpainted. £150-300

The ex CLC shed at Northwich housed 40 locos during this period, three of which were ex GCR 4-4-0 Directors. It was then recoded 8E in 1958. The ex GCR shed at Gorton was transferred from the ER (39A) and all 110 of its charges carried the 9G code until closure in 1965. The front repainted. £100-200

It then swopped regions and codes with the ex MR and S&DJR joint shed at Bath Green Park, which had 50 locos during this period. It was noted for its S&DJR 2-8-0s and the diminutive Sentinel 0-4-0T 47191. The front repainted. £250-400

Allocated new to Darlington and later Stockton, with a final six years at Carlisle Canal from where it was withdrawn on 21 March 1962 and cut up at Cowlairs Works.
