Great Central Railwayana Auction Sale 211, Auction Lot 194
Lot 194 A nameplate, SGT. J SMITH V.C., BENGAL SAPPERS & MINERS, from a LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 No 8021 built at Crewe in 1937. Requisitioned by the War Department in 1941, it became WD 70575 and, after conversion to oil burning, was sent to Persia in November 1941 and in 1946 transferred to 10 Railway Squadron R.E. in Egypt. In August 1952 it returned to England in a very sorry state and was rebuilt by BR at Derby in 1952-4. It went in May 1955 to Longmoor Military Railway where it was named and renumbered WD 511. Moving to Cairnryan Military Railway in south-west Scotland in 1956, it was withdrawn on the closure of the Railway and sold for scrap in 1959 to J.N. Connell at Coatbridge. Note: Sgt Smith was one of three soldiers awarded the V.C. for the storming of the Kashmir Gate at Delhi on 14 September 1857 during the Indian Mutiny. Cast brass, overall 50"x19½", in ex loco condition. The plate is from the Hugh Ballantyne collection. £3000-5000
